diaries
A series of expressive portraits that play with the secret meanings of snapshots. This series is mainly inspired by the writing and symbols found in a doodled diary, especially the honesty found in that private and most personal medium. The series is also referencing the unabashed playfulness of Myspace culture, specifically the phenomenon of Blingee, a service that lets users decorate images with all manner of animated effects and decorative clutter.
I allowed myself to get worked up and emotional while painting the Diaries series, and forced myself not to plan ahead but to let the image guide my emotional responses. Through this process, I was able to find deeply layered meaning about my subjects. All of my portraits are of people I’ve come in contact with and illustrate this connection and the time period in my life.
These paintings are large-scale oil and mixed media on canvas. Beer bottle foil used as improvised gold leaf, glitter, Sharpie, ink, charcoal, oil bars, spray paint and stencils are examples of the materials used freely along with traditional oils.
